Neodani Fault - Neodani Fault

Japanese:
Neodani Fault - Neodani Fault

This is a 35 km long active left-lateral strike-slip fault that runs from near Nogo Hakusan in the west of Gifu Prefecture through Neo in Motosu City to the northwest of Gifu City. During the 1891 (Meiji 24) Nobi earthquake (magnitude 8.0), the largest inland direct-hit earthquake in Japan's history, the Neo Valley fault was active along with the neighboring Nukumi fault and Umehara fault, causing a maximum left-lateral strike-slip surface displacement of about 8 meters. In particular, the 6-meter high fault scarp that appeared near what is now Midori in Neo, Motosu City, is world-famous as a typical example of an earthquake fault, as a clear photograph of it was introduced in an English-language paper by Koto Bunjiro, who was a professor at Tokyo Imperial University at the time. The Neo Valley fault zone is sometimes called the Neo Valley fault zone, including other left-lateral strike-slip active faults that were active during the Nobi earthquake.
