[Birth] 1666 [Died] 1714 German theologian. Influenced by Spener, he joined a Pietist gathering with mystical tendencies around 1689. He viewed the history of the church as a history of corruption from its origins, and studied early Christianity as a model for the church. He was appointed professor of church history at the University of Giessen, but soon left to become a pastor and devoted himself to writing. In his major work, Unparteiische Kirchen-und Ketzerhistorie (History of Sects and Heretics) (4 volumes, 1699), he sparked controversy by considering the "heretics" who created sect churches with mystical tendencies to be true Christians, but his attempt to provide a narrative based on the writings of the heretics themselves has contributed greatly to the study of church history.
