Also called hoshi (hoshii) and karei (karei). The sound of hoshi is bi, which is similar to the sound of preparedness, and means rice to prepare for emergencies. It is made by steaming rice and drying it in the shade. It is eaten by soaking it in water or pouring hot water over it to soften it. It has been used as a portable food and a preserved food since ancient times. Domyoji hoshi is made from glutinous rice and has been made in Domyoji, Kawachi since the Heian period. 糒(ほしい),餉(かれい)とも。糒の音はビで備に通じ,急に備える米の意。米を蒸して陰干ししたもの。水に浸したり湯をかけてもどして食べる。古くから携帯食,保存食とされた。道明寺糒はもち米によるもので,河内の道明寺で平安時代からつくられている。現在も菓子材料とされる。
