When the part of the occipital bone that connects with the parietal bone is made up of one, two, three or four separate bones, it is called an interparietal bone, and since it is relatively common among the Incas of Peru, it has been noted and is commonly called the Inca bone, but it is not unique to the Incas. The reported incidence rates are 1.2% in European Caucasians, 2.3% in Mongoloids, 0.8% in Australian Aborigines, 5.1% in Incas, and 4.5% in Japanese. The cause is that only the part of the occipital bone close to the parietal bone develops as an additional bone made of connective tissue, so it is often delayed in bonding with the other parts and becoming an independent bone.
