1310‐70 The last Polish king of the Piast dynasty. Reigned from 1333 to 1370. Known as "The Great." This nickname, meaning "tall" to distinguish him from his father, who was called the "short king," later came to mean "great," which shows how important this king's reign was to the history of Poland. Poland experienced rapid economic development due to the eastern colonization of Germany that began in the 13th century, and this marked the beginning of the unification of the country into a kingdom. Kazimierz, who succeeded to the throne upon his father's death in 1333, made the kingdom that his father had managed to unify into a unified state by establishing a legal code (the Kazimierz Code) and issuing currency.
