A perennial herb of the Lamiaceae family (illustration) that grows in sunny mountain grasslands. The stem is erect, 20-50 cm tall, and has downward-facing fine hairs. The leaves are broadly linear, opposite, and 2-6 cm long, and many have short branches with several small leaves in the axils. The flowers bloom in June and July on short spikes at the top of the stems; they are bluish-purple, bi-lipped, and 3-3.5 cm long. The calyx is tubular with 15 veins and slightly bi-lipped. There are four stamens, two of which are long, and the anthers are hairy. It is distributed in the Chubu region and north of Honshu, Hokkaido, Korea, northern China, and eastern Siberia.

日当りのよい山の草地に生えるシソ科の多年草（イラスト）。茎は直立して高さ20～50cm，下向きの細毛がある。葉は対生し，広線形で長さ2～6cm，多くは葉腋（ようえき）に数枚の小型の葉をつけた短い枝がある。花は6～7月ころ，茎の頂端に短い花穂を作って開き，青紫色，2唇形で長さ3～3.5cm。萼は筒状で15脈があり，やや2唇形となる。おしべは4本あって中2本は長く，葯には毛がある。本州の中部地方以北，北海道，朝鮮，中国北部，東シベリアに分布する。
