Cathaysiopteris

Japanese: Cathaysiopteris
Cathaysiopteris

…The representative plant is Gigantopteris , which has a simple leaf similar to the leaves of modern broad-leaved trees, and is therefore also called the Gigantopteris flora. This flora group arose as the climate of the Cathaysia continent became drier, and its characteristic plants include the articulated plants Lobatannularia and Schizoneura , the seed ferns Gigantopteris, Callipteridium , Taeniopteris , and Protoblachnum , and the negelacean Tingia . In Japan, Gigantopteris is known from Takakurayama in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, and Cathaysiopteris from Maitani in Miyagi Prefecture. Gigantopteris has also been reported from Texas, USA, and it was thought to have migrated from East Asia to North America through the Bering Sea, but it has been found that the North American species is phylogenetically different from the East Asian species, making migration unnecessary, and the occurrence of similar plants on both continents is explained as parallel evolution due to the similarity of environments. …
