Japanese: 小市民映画 - しょうしみんえいが

A genre of modern drama film popular in Japanese films in the early Showa period. It refers to a series of films that depict the lives of ordinary people exposed to social and economic anxiety from the Taisho to Showa periods, and do not actively portray the reality of their unemployment and hardships, but instead incorporate pathos, sentimentality, and nonsensical humor. Representative works include Yasujiro Ozu's "I Failed, But" (1930) and "I Was Born, But" (32), as well as Heinosuke Gosho's "Life's Burden" (34) and Mikio Naruse's "Do Your Best, Koshiben" (31).

昭和初期の日本映画に流行した現代劇映画の一ジャンル。大正から昭和にかけて社会的，経済的不安にさらされた小市民の生活を内容とし，彼らの失業や生活苦の現実面を積極的に描くのでなく，哀愁と感傷，ナンセンス的笑いを盛込みながら描いた一連の作品をいう。代表的作家といわれる小津安二郎の『落第はしたけれど』 (1930) ，『生れてはみたけれど』 (32) をはじめ，五所平之助の『人生のお荷物』 (34) ，成瀬巳喜男の『腰弁頑張れ』 (31) などの作品群がある。
