A mammal of the family Delphinidae in the suborder Odontoceti. Also called the bottlenose or black. A large, beaked dolphin that can reach a body length of 3.5m and is found in temperate and tropical regions around the world. Its back is black-brown, and the border between it and the white area on its belly is unclear. Its snout is thick and short, and it has 18 to 26 teeth on each side. In the waters around Japan, they are found in coastal and offshore areas of warm currents, and usually live in schools of 20 to 50 individuals, feeding on fish such as squid, horse mackerel, mackerel, and mullet. They form mixed schools with false killer whales, short-finned pilot whales, and Risso's whales, and often ride the bow waves of ships.

ハクジラ亜目マイルカ科の哺乳類。バンドウ，クロとも呼ぶ。世界中の温帯，熱帯に分布するくちばしのある体長3.5mに達する大型イルカ。背面は黒褐色で，腹部の白色域との境は不明りょう。吻（ふん）は太くて短く，歯は上下左右に各18～26本ずつある。日本近海では暖流系の沿岸や沖合域に多く，ふつう20～50頭の群れで生活し，イカやアジ，サバ，ボラなどの魚類を食する。オキゴンドウ，コビレゴンドウ，ハナゴンドウなどとも混群をつくり，船首波にもよく乗る。
