The largest island in the Bismarck Islands. It lies east of New Guinea. The inhabitants are Melanesian. The capital is Rabaul, at the northeastern tip. The island is crescent-shaped and has several active volcanoes, the highest being Mount Father (2,300m). It belongs to Papua New Guinea. Its main products include copra and cocoa. Area : 37,800 km2.
