New Britain [island] - New Britain
The largest island in the Bismarck Islands. It lies east of New Guinea. The inhabitants are Melanesian. The capital is Rabaul, at the northeastern tip. The island is crescent-shaped and has several active volcanoes, the highest being Mount Father (2,300m). It belongs to Papua New Guinea. Its main products include copra and cocoa. Area : 37,800 km2. Population: 405,000 (2000).
