Greek goddess of arts and learning. Plural Musai, or Muses in English. According to Hereodos, they were daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. During the Roman Empire, the fields they were responsible for were more or less established as follows: Calliope (epic poetry), Cleo (history), Euterpe (lyric poetry), Thalia (comedy), Melpomene (tragedy), Terpsichore (song, dance, chorus), Urania (astronomy), Erato (solo singing), and Polyhymnia (hymn). The center of their worship was Mount Helicon, especially the Hippocrene spring on the mountain. → Related topics Music | Muse Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
