Stoke‐on‐Trent

An industrial city in northern Staffordshire, central England, UK. Population 254,000 (1995). Located on the southwest foot of the Pennines, on the banks of the River Stoke, with coal and clay from the North Staffordshire coalfields as its backdrop, the city is home to many ceramic factories, including Wedgwood, and also produces bricks, tiles, steel, and tyres. It was formed in 1910 by the merger of six towns and villages - Stoke-upon-Trent, Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall, Longton, and Fenton - all of which were long-established pottery centres.

イギリス，イングランド中部，スタッフォードシャー北部にある工業都市。人口25万4000(1995)。ペナイン山脈の南西麓，ストーク川河畔に位置し，北スタッフォード炭田の石炭と陶土を背景にウェッジウッド社をはじめ陶磁器工場が集中し，煉瓦，タイルや鉄鋼，タイヤの生産も行われる。1910年に古くからの製陶地，ストーク･アポン･トレント，ハンリー，バーズレム，タンスタル，ロングトン，フェントンの6町村が合併して成立した。
