A river that flows through Switzerland and Italy, a tributary of the Po. In French it is called Tessin. Its total length is 248 km. It originates near the St. Gotthard Pass in Switzerland, empties into the northern end of Lake Maggiore, and then re-emerges at the southern end of the lake, irrigating the plains of Lombardy before joining the Po southeast of Pavia. It is an alpine river with a large difference in flow rate between summer and winter. Many canals have been dug in the lower reaches, and they have been used for navigation and agricultural irrigation. [Aichi Hagiwara] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
