Narrow - Musa

Japanese: 身狭 - むさ

An ancient place name referring to the area south and southeast of Mount Unebi in present-day Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. The tomb of Emperor Senka appears to be the Misa-Musanotsuki-Sakanoe tomb in the Nihon Shoki and Engishiki. There is a theory that this tomb of Emperor Senka is not the currently designated Misanzai Tomb (located in Toriya-cho, Kashihara City), but rather the Mise-Maruyama Tomb (straddling Mise-cho, Oikaru-cho, and Gojono-cho in Kashihara City), the largest keyhole-shaped tomb in Nara Prefecture. The place name Mise can be considered a pronunciation of Misa.

現在の奈良県橿原市の畝傍（うねび）山の南および南東一帯をさす古代地名。宣化天皇陵は，《日本書紀》や《延喜式》には，身狭桃花鳥坂上（むさのつきさかのえ）陵とみえている。この宣化天皇陵については，現在治定のミサンザイ古墳(橿原市鳥屋町所在)とは違って，奈良県下最大の前方後円墳である見瀬丸山古墳(橿原市見瀬町，大軽町，五条野町にまたがっている)をあてる説が存在する。この見瀬の地名は，身狭のなまりとみてよい。
