A Chinese gate with two pillars connected at the top with a crosspiece and two wooden doors in between. It is also called the Wu-Tou Zhao Cue Gate or the Wu-Tou Dai Gate. During the Tang and Song dynasties, only a limited number of officials were allowed to use this gate in their homes. In Pingjiang (Suzhou) during the Northern Song dynasty, this gate was often used for the gates of village temples. After the Song dynasty, it became generally known as the Laixing Gate, and many stone ones remain in Confucius temples around the country. Today, the roofless style gates of the Pailou (architecture) known as Pai Fang are similar to this gate. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
