Japanese: 白い嫁と黒い嫁 - しろいよめとくろいよめ

This is the title given to number 135 in Grimm's Fairy Tales. Similar stepchild tales are also handed down in Northern, Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. As such, there are many variations, but the story is roughly as follows: A god in the form of a poor man asks for directions, and while the god's own son is cold, the stepchild responds kindly, and in return is given beauty. The stepchild's older brother works as a coachman for the king, but a painting he has of his sister catches the king's eye and he proposes to the stepchild. On the way to the wedding, the stepmother throws the stepchild into the river, and the stepchild becomes the king's bride. The stepchild, who was thrown into the river, appears in the kitchen of the royal palace transformed into a duck and sings the truth.

《グリム童話集》135番にあてられた題名。類似の継子話は北欧，中欧，東欧，南欧でも伝承されている。したがって変化も多いが，ほぼ次のような話である。貧乏人の姿をした神が道を尋ねると，実子は冷たいが継子は親切に答え，そのお礼として美しさを与えられる。継子の兄は王の御者をしているが，彼のもっていた妹の絵が王の目にとまり，継子が求婚される。嫁入りの途中で継母は継子を川に落とし，実子を王の嫁にする。川に落とされた継子は鴨に姿をかえて王城の台所に現れ，真実を歌う。
