Francisco Balagtas

The father of Tagalog poetry and literature in the Philippines. Born to a poor blacksmith in Biga, Bulacan. At the age of 11, he went to work for a wealthy family in Tondo, a downtown area of Manila, and, thanks to his master's help, he graduated from San Jose College and San Juan de Leturan College. At the time, Tondo was a town where famous Tagalog poets such as Jose de la Cruz gathered, and Balagtas's natural talent for poetry blossomed here. However, his life was not necessarily happy, and he was forced to spend two or three years from around 1835 and four years from 1856 in prison on strange charges.

フィリピンのタガログ語詩文学の父。ブラカン州ビガア町の貧しい鍛冶屋に生まれた。11歳のときマニラの下町トンドの富裕な家庭に奉公に出，主人の世話でサン･ホセ学院，サン･フアン･デ･レトゥラン学院を卒業した。当時のトンドはホセ･デ･ラ･クルスなど著名なタガログ詩人の集う町で，バラグタスの天与の詩才はここで花開いた。しかし彼の人生はかならずしも幸せなものではなく，1835年ごろから2～3年間と，56年から4年間，奇怪な罪状で牢獄生活を強いられた。
