…reigned 1458-71. Czech prince who led the moderate Hussite faction (Utraquist). After the death of Sigismund, King of Hungary and Bohemia (1437), he occupied Prague (1448) with the support of the minor and middle noble families and cities against the Catholic princes who were trying to seize power. He then became regent (1452) and was elected king (1458) on the condition that he be loyal to the Pope and suppress the Czech Brethren. In 1462, when the Pope finally refused to recognize the concordat between the Utraquist and Sigismund, his conflict with the church flared up again. …
