A former town in Nishiiwai County, the southernmost part of Iwate Prefecture. The Kitakami River flows along the eastern border, and the town is hilly and prosperous for rice, livestock, and fruit cultivation. It also cultivates silkworms. The Tohoku Main Line runs through the town. In September 2005, it was incorporated into Ichinoseki City along with the towns of Senmaya, Daito, Higashiyama, Murone, and Kawasaki in Higashiiwai County. Area: 126.83 km2 .
