A former town in Nishiiwai County, the southernmost part of Iwate Prefecture. The Kitakami River flows along the eastern border, and the town is hilly and prosperous for rice, livestock, and fruit cultivation. It also cultivates silkworms. The Tohoku Main Line runs through the town. In September 2005, it was incorporated into Ichinoseki City along with the towns of Senmaya, Daito, Higashiyama, Murone, and Kawasaki in Higashiiwai County. Area: 126.83 km2 . 岩手県最南端，西磐井(にしいわい)郡の旧町。東境を北上川が流れ，丘陵地が広く，稲作，畜産，果樹栽培が盛ん。養蚕も行う。東北本線が通じる。2005年９月東磐井郡千厩町，大東町，東山町，室根村，川崎村と一関市へ編入。126.83km2。１万6272人（2003）。
