Minki Soshun

Minki Soshun

A Rinzai sect monk who came to Japan at the end of the Kamakura period. He was from Qingyuanfu (Zhejiang Province), China. His secular surname was Huang. He inherited the teachings of Koganjofu at Reiyinji Temple, and after living in various temples, he was invited to come to Japan in 1330 (Gentoku 2) accompanied by Jikusen Bonsen. When asked about the essentials of the sect by Emperor Godaigo, he explained them and was given the title of Butsunichien Ezenji. He was asked by Hojo Takatoki to live at Kenchoji Temple, but was moved to Nanzenji Temple and then Kenninji Temple by imperial order. He also became the founder of Kogon-ji Temple in Settsu (Hyogo Prefecture). He passed away on September 27, 1336 (1st year of Engen, 3rd year of Kenmu) at the abbot's quarters of Kennin-ji Temple. He is the author of "The Sayings of Priest Myogyoku Soshun."

鎌倉末期に来日した臨済(りんざい)宗の僧。中国、慶元府(けいげんふ)(浙江(せっこう)省)の人。俗姓は黄(こう)氏。霊隠寺(りんにんじ)の虎岩浄伏(こがんじょうふく)の法を嗣(つ)ぎ、諸寺を歴住したのち、招かれて1330年(元徳2)竺仙梵僊(じくせんぼんせん)を伴って来朝した。後醍醐(ごだいご)天皇に宗要を問われて説き、仏日燄慧禅師(ぶつにちえんえぜんじ)の号を賜った。北条高時(ほうじょうたかとき)に請われて建長寺に住したが、勅により南禅寺を経て建仁寺へ移った。また摂津(兵庫県)広厳寺(こうごんじ)の開山となる。1336年(延元1・建武3)9月27日、建仁寺の方丈で示寂。著に『明極楚俊和尚(わじょう)語録』がある。
