It is an ancient city that was first mentioned in the Russian chronicles as Ltava in 1174, but it was the Northern War (1700-21) that made its name known in world history. The army of Sweden's Charles XII, who invaded Russia, joined forces with the Ukrainian Cossack chief Mazepa in May 1709 and besieged the strategic city of Poltava, but was defeated in July by the army of Russian Tsar Peter I.
