This is an essay by Yanagisawa Kien, a retainer of the Yanagisawa Domain in Yamato Koriyama, who was said to be a man of refinement, skilled in both the arts and martial arts, and versed in a variety of arts, with 16 skills worthy of being a teacher to others. It was never published in the early modern period, and was only available in manuscript form. According to the preface, it was created in 1724 (Kyoho 9), when Kien was 21 years old and his lord, the Yanagisawa family, was transferred from Kofu to Yamato Koriyama. Kien was one of the castle receivers, and in Kujo, he took up his pen to soothe his daily boredom. The contents of the essay cover a wide range of arts and entertainment, including painting, waka poetry, haiku, koto, shakuhachi, and shamisen, but he was particularly fond of courtesans and leisure, and we can see that he was a man of refinement with many hobbies and no particular attachment to any particular thing.
