A town in the province of Rome in the Lazio region in central Italy. Population 6,239 (1981). 27 km southeast of Rome, on the west shore of Lake Albano, it is one of the medieval towns (Castelli Romani) scattered throughout the Albano mountain range. The town was founded around the Gandolfi castle, built in the 12th century, and in the 17th century the castle became the property of the Vatican. It is still the Pope's summer residence. It is also famous as a tourist and health resort, with a church designed by Bernini. The ruins of the Roman city of Alba Longa are nearby.
