It is an acid with the general formula RSO 2 H, and its hydrogen-substituted form, sulfoxylic acid H 2 SO 2, does not actually exist. It is synthesized by reduction of sulfonyl chloride or by reaction with sulfur dioxide and a Grignard reagent. Its structure has the following two tautomers. It is a weak acid and forms salts with various metals. It is oxidized to sulfonic acid. It is used as a polymerization catalyst.
