Unibos (English spelling)

Japanese: ウニボス（英語表記）Unibos

A popular tale about a great liar told in the 11th century by a bard turned monk in northern France. In Grimm's Fairy Tales, story number 61, "The Little Peasant," is a similar tale, and Andersen also retells it under the names "Big Claus" and "Little Claus." Unibos means a poor man who has only one cow. When a man called Unibos lies and says he has sold the hide of a dead cow, the village chief, magistrate, and monk imitate him and kill the cow, but they are unable to sell the hide. He tricks the three men who come to take revenge by using a plan to bring the dead back to life, a horse that farts for gold coins.

11世紀ころ，北フランスで僧侶出身の吟遊詩人によって語られ，人気を博した大うそつきの物語。《グリム童話》では61番〈小百姓〉がこれの類話であり，アンデルセンも〈大クラウス，小クラウス〉の名で再話している。ウニボスとは1頭の牛しかもっていない貧乏人の意。ウニボスとよばれる男が死んだ牛の皮が売れたとうそをつくと，村長，代官，僧侶がまねして牛を殺すが皮は売れない。彼は復讐にきた3人を，死者を生き返らせる策，金貨を屁（ひ）る馬でだます。
