A popular tale about a great liar told in the 11th century by a bard turned monk in northern France. In Grimm's Fairy Tales, story number 61, "The Little Peasant," is a similar tale, and Andersen also retells it under the names "Big Claus" and "Little Claus." Unibos means a poor man who has only one cow. When a man called Unibos lies and says he has sold the hide of a dead cow, the village chief, magistrate, and monk imitate him and kill the cow, but they are unable to sell the hide. He tricks the three men who come to take revenge by using a plan to bring the dead back to life, a horse that farts for gold coins. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
