1777‐1850 Argentine soldier and politician. Born in Buenos Aires to a Basque French father, he returned to Argentina after receiving his education in Paris and served as a soldier from 1806 onwards. When the War of Independence began in 1810, he joined the independence army and became Supreme President in May 1816. When Argentina gained independence in July of the same year, he became the first Supreme President of the Republic and contributed to the independence of South America by supporting General San Martín's operation to liberate Chile. However, domestic affairs were stalemate due to resistance from the Federalists, and after resigning in 1819, he never held any public office.
