…This empire, an imperfect imitation of the celestial empire of Christ, is overridden by an omnipotent emperor (Autokratōr), the equivalent of the one celestial omnipotent God (Pantokratōr), who is God's delegate with supreme authority in matters spiritual as well as temporal. His subjects, the Romans (Rhōmaioi), enjoy exclusively a civilized life under the peace guaranteed by the order of Roman law, an imitation of the celestial order. They are governed by imperial officials, whose ranks are modeled on the hierarchical order of the angels.
