A salamander of the order Caudata, class Amphibians, family Hynobiidae. It inhabits the hilly areas and lowlands along the mountains of Honshu west of Shiga and Mie prefectures, as well as Kagawa, Tokushima, Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto prefectures. Its back is dark brown to yellowish brown with scattered tiny black spots, and its ventral side is light colored. There are prominent yellow stripes on the upper and lower edges of its tail. Its total length is 7 to 11 centimeters. It lays eggs in still water from January to March. When the female attaches one end of the egg sac to a branch or stone in the water and begins laying eggs, a nearby male clings to the egg sac and fertilizes it. The egg sacs are wound in a spiral in pairs, and there are around 200 eggs. Outside of the spawning season, it lives in forests and bamboo groves, feeding on small animals. A subspecies, the Tokyo salamander H. n. tokyoensis , is found in the Kanto and Tokai regions.
