Miranda (English spelling)
Born: March 28, 1750, Caracas
[Died] July 14, 1816. Venezuelan revolutionary from Cadiz. He participated in the Spanish army from 1773 to 1782, and the French revolutionary army from 1792 to 1793. In 1898, he traveled to England to seek assistance in liberating the Spanish colony, but was unsuccessful. He then traveled to America again, and in 1806, he attempted to land a liberation army in Venezuela, but failed and went into exile in Trinidad. In 1810, the Venezuelan independence movement from Spain broke out, and in July 1811, he was called from London to become the governor of Venezuela, where he fought against the Spanish royalists, but was defeated and was forced to sign the surrender document in July 1812. He was denounced as a traitor by the revolutionaries including S. Bolivar, arrested by the Spanish army, and died in prison in Spain.

A moon of Uranus. Discovered by G. Kuiper in 1948. Its luminosity is about 17th magnitude. Its radius is estimated to be about 240 km. Its orbital period is 33 hours 56 minutes.

ベネズエラの革命家。 1773~82年スペイン軍,92~93年フランス革命軍に参加。 98年イギリスにも渡ってスペイン植民地解放の援助を求めたが成功せず,再びアメリカにおもむき,1806年解放軍をベネズエラに上陸させようとしたが失敗しトリニダードに亡命した。 10年ベネズエラのスペインからの独立運動が勃発,11年7月ロンドンから呼ばれてベネズエラの統領となりスペイン王統派と戦ったが敗れ,12年7月降伏文書に調印を余儀なくされた。 S.ボリバルらの革命派から裏切者として糾弾を受け,スペイン軍に逮捕されてスペインで獄死した。
