Born: March 28, 1750, Caracas [Died] July 14, 1816. Venezuelan revolutionary from Cadiz. He participated in the Spanish army from 1773 to 1782, and the French revolutionary army from 1792 to 1793. In 1898, he traveled to England to seek assistance in liberating the Spanish colony, but was unsuccessful. He then traveled to America again, and in 1806, he attempted to land a liberation army in Venezuela, but failed and went into exile in Trinidad. In 1810, the Venezuelan independence movement from Spain broke out, and in July 1811, he was called from London to become the governor of Venezuela, where he fought against the Spanish royalists, but was defeated and was forced to sign the surrender document in July 1812. He was denounced as a traitor by the revolutionaries including S. Bolivar, arrested by the Spanish army, and died in prison in Spain. Miranda |
