A village in Awa County, southern Chiba Prefecture. Population 4,752 (1995). Bordering the north of Tateyama City, it occupies the basin of the Heguri River and its tributary, the Yamana River, which flow into Tateyama Bay. It was the site of the Awa provincial government office in ancient times, and the jori system of land divisions remains. Agriculture is the main industry, and mixed management of rice paddies and dairy farming is widespread, with the production of parsley and other vegetables also taking place. In recent years, there has also been an increase in greenhouse horticulture, growing flowers, strawberries, cucumbers, and other plants. 千葉県南部,安房郡の村。人口4752(1995)。館山市の北に接し,館山湾に注ぐ平久里(へぐり)川と支流の山名川の流域を占める。古代に安房国府が置かれたところで,条里制の地割りも残る。産業の中心は農業で,水田と酪農の複合経営が普及し,パセリなどの野菜生産も行われる。近年は花卉,イチゴ,キュウリなどの施設園芸も増えている。【千葉 立也】
