This is a condition in which the ripples on the sea surface immediately after a school of bonito, mackerel, sardines, etc. float to the surface and the ripples caused by a light breeze interfere with each other and cancel each other out, making the water look like oil spilling. The fish gather in a large number, rise to the surface, turn their bodies sideways to show their ventral sides, and splash around, causing the water surface to take on a slightly reddish hue. This is often seen under the hot summer sun. Experienced fishermen can spot it from afar.

かつお，さば，いわしなどの群が浮遊した直後，海面に生じるさざなみと微風によって起るさざなみとが互いに干渉して消し合い，水面が油を流したようになる状態のこと。魚類が密集して，水面に浮上し，体を横にして腹面を現したり，はね回ったりするので，水面が少し赤みを呈する。夏の炎天下によくみられる。熟練した漁夫は遠方からこれを発見することができる。
