Mount Jizan

Japanese: 慈山 - じざん
Mount Jizan

A monk in the early Edo period. His pen name was Myoryu. He was born in Mimasaka Province (Okayama Prefecture). At the age of 17, he became a monk at Kazan-ji Temple in Kyoto under the name Raiho. In 1668 (Kanbun 8), he studied at Sennyuji Temple and read all the Buddhist scriptures. He took the precepts of the Yoraku-kyo Sutra by oath in Sakamoto, Otsu, and became devoted to the teachings of Tendai Buddhism. Since Tendai Buddhism is based on Mahayana precepts, there was a movement to eliminate Jizan, which is based on Hinayana precepts, so he moved to Kyoto. He was revered by lay people, including Ohara Kajii Monzeki and Shogoin Monzeki, and gave lectures on Tendai teachings, advocating that Tendai sects should also study Hinayana precepts, and that one should practice the Sokushin Nembutsu method. He passed away on July 3, 1600, at the age of 54. His disciple was Reiku Kouken.
