Kebori

Japanese: 毛彫 - けぼり

One of the techniques of metal engraving, it is the oldest. Lines are engraved with a thin, sharp chisel to create patterns or letters. It is so named because it expresses hair on the metal surface and carves hair-thin lines. It can be seen in the metalwork of the Sui and Tang dynasties and the mother-of-pearl inlay found in the Shosoin Treasures, but it became popular in Japan during the Heian period, and excellent examples of this technique were made, such as the sutra boxes at Kinpusenji Temple and Enryakuji Temple. Carving that is done quickly to give the lines discontinuities is called kebori.

彫金の技法の一つで，もっとも古いもの。細く鋭いたがねで線を刻み，文様や文字を描く。金属の表面に毛を表現したり，毛のように細い線を彫るところからこの名称がある。隋唐の金工品や正倉院宝物の螺鈿(らでん)などにもみえるが，日本では平安時代に流行し，金峯山寺や延暦寺の経箱などすぐれたものが作られた。彫るときに速度を速めて線に断続を与えたものは蹴彫(けぼり)と呼ぶ。
