A village in Kamihei County in south-central Iwate Prefecture. Population 5,726 (1995). Bordering Tono City to the west. The mountains of the Kitakami Highlands make up most of the village area, with a small amount of lowland along the Sarugaishi River, a tributary of the Kitakami River, and its tributaries, the Miyamori River and the Tatsusobe River. The village is served by the JR Kamaishi Line and National Route 283. Rice, tobacco and hops are cultivated, and livestock farming has become popular in recent years. Timber is also produced. On the border with Towa Town to the west, there is the Tase Dam, built on the Sarugaishi River, which is used for irrigation. 岩手県中南部,上閉伊(かみへい)郡の村。人口5726(1995)。遠野市の西に接する。北上高地の山々が村域の大部分を占め,北上川の支流猿ヶ石川とその支流宮守川,達曾部(たつそべ)川沿いにわずかな低地がある。JR釜石線,国道283号線が通じる。米作,タバコやホップの栽培のほか,最近は畜産が盛んである。木材も産する。西隣の東和町との境には猿ヶ石川につくられた田瀬ダムがあり,灌漑に利用される。ダム湖ではワカサギの養殖が行われ,冬は釣客でにぎわう。
