It is a key location for land and water transport in northern Hunan Province, with a thriving logistics industry. It is the province's only port on the Yangtze River, and was opened as an international trade port in 1996. In addition to the Beijing-Guangzhou Line, the city is also home to the Beijing-Guangzhou High Speed Rail (opened in 2012) and the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway (Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau). It is an industrial city with factories producing paper, machinery, building materials, petrochemicals, and more. The surrounding areas produce rice, cotton, and tea, and fish farming and pig farming are also thriving. Junshan, located in Dongting Lake off the coast of the city's west gate tower, Yueyang Tower, is a historic site, and the city is also famous as a tea-producing area.
