It was used mainly in the living rooms and dining rooms of the country estates and townhouses of the landed classes, but by the 18th century, its shape had become more refined and it was popular in the lobbies and offices of inns, as well as in the kitchens and servants' rooms of upper-class families in big cities, and it was widely supported as a chair for the common people. In the 1720s, this chair was introduced to America, where its simple and practical form suited the colonial lifestyle and became very popular. …
