Niue Island (English spelling)

Niue is a raised coral island located in the South Pacific Ocean, 480 km east of the Tonga Islands, at 19°02' south latitude and 169°55' west longitude. It is a self-governing territory of New Zealand. Its area is 258 km2 and its population is 2,300 (1994). The majority of the inhabitants are Niueans of Polynesian descent. The Niuean language is closest to Tongan, but dialects exist in the northern and southern parts of the island. The central part of the island is covered with lush forests, and settlements are located along the coast. Its location on the edge of the tropics makes for a pleasant and comfortable climate.

南太平洋，トンガ諸島の東480km，南緯19゜02′，西経169゜55′の海上に位置する隆起サンゴ礁の島。ニュージーランドの自治領。面積258km2，人口2300(1994)。住民の大部分はポリネシア系のニウエ人である。ニウエ語はトンガ語に最も近いが，島の北部や南部では方言が存在する。島の中央部はこんもりした森林となっており，集落は海岸に沿っている。熱帯の端に位置するため過ごしやすく快適な気候である。
