Basidiomycetes, order Matsutake, family Coprinus. Grows in colonies on the surface of fertile soil from spring to autumn. Cap is initially ovate, then bell-shaped or conical. 5-8cm in diameter, white surface with scutes, later gray or light gray-brown, loses scutes, and shows radial stripes. Stalk is 0.8-1.5cm in diameter, 8-18cm long. White, silky, hollow, often with a ring-shaped brim near the base. Young mushrooms are edible. Distributed throughout Japan, Europe, North America, Africa, and China. Related species include C. micaceus , C. comatus , and C. macrorhizus , all of which are edible.

担子菌類マツタケ目ヒトヨタケ科。春から秋にかけて，肥沃な土壌の表面に群生する。傘は初め卵形，のちに鐘形または円錐形となる。径5～8cm，表面は白色で鱗被を有し，のちに灰色ないし淡灰褐色となり鱗被を失い放射状の条がみられる。柄は直径 0.8～1.5cm，長さ8～18cm。白色で絹状の光沢を有し，中空でしばしば基部近くに環状の鍔 (つば) をもっている。若いものは食用となる。日本全土，ヨーロッパ，北アメリカ，アフリカ，中国に分布する。近縁種にキララタケ C. micaceus，ササクレヒトヨタケ C. comatus，ネナガヒトヨタケ C. macrorhizusなどがあり，いずれも食用となる。
