A quantity z = f ( x , y ), which is a function of two variables x and y , is said to be inversely proportional to x and y when it is proportional to y when x is fixed, and proportional to x when y is fixed. If a = f (1, 1) then z = axy . For example, there are many quantities that are inversely proportional, such as the amount transported being proportional to weight and distance, or momentum being proportional to mass and speed.
