Voltaic cell

Voltaic cell
A primary battery invented in 1800 by the Italian A. Volta. When zinc and copper are immersed in dilute sulfuric acid and connected with a conductor, the zinc at the cathode dissolves into ions, and hydrogen ions are generated as hydrogen gas at the anode, causing an electric current to flow and forming a battery. The zinc electrode corrodes and dissolves constantly even when not in use, so it is no longer used today, but it made a great contribution to the development of electrochemistry. Volta was inspired by L. Galvani's experiments on electrical phenomena in frog muscles, so it is also called a Galvanic cell.
