Also written as 'horo'. A protective accessory used by warriors when armed, both for decoration and to protect against stray arrows. Examples include kake-horo (late Heian period), a long piece of cloth that fluttered down the back of a horse-riding warrior's armor, and horoshi-mono (Muromachi period), a basket wrapped in cloth to make it look inflated by the wind. Also, a bag used to cover the feathers in a quiver to protect them from rain was called ya-horo, but it was sometimes simply called horoshi. 母衣とも書く。武士が装飾を兼ねて流れ矢を防ぐために用いた武装の際の補助具。馬に乗った武士が鎧の背から長い布をなびかせるようにした懸 (かけ) 保呂 (平安時代末期) ,風にふくらんだ形にみせるために籠を布で包んだ保呂指物 (室町時代) などがある。また箙 (えびら) に差した矢羽根を雨などから防ぐためにおおう袋を矢保呂といったが,これを単に保呂と呼ぶ場合もあった。
