Abdication of the throne while the emperor is alive. Also called abdication. In the past, the succession to the throne took place when the emperor died, but after Empress Kogyoku abdicated to Emperor Kotoku in 645, abdication became the custom. In the Heian period, the abdication ceremony and the enthronement ceremony were separated. With the establishment of the Imperial House Law in 1889, succession to the throne came to be limited to when the emperor died. → Enthronement Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
