An old city in the northwest of the Satsuma Peninsula in western Kagoshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. The city center, which is served by the Kagoshima Main Line and National Route 3, is one of the prefecture's leading fishing ports, and is home to deep-sea tuna fishing, seafood processing, shipbuilding, and ice manufacturing. Potatoes, sour pomelos, and mandarin oranges are cultivated, and livestock processing such as ham is also thriving. A national underground oil storage facility was built at Kushikino New Port, and the Seisatsu Core Industrial Park was developed nearby. The Kushikino Mine has been producing gold since the feudal era. In October 2005, it merged with Ichiki Town, Hioki County, to become a city, forming Ichikikushikino City. Area: 80.46 km2 .
