A prominent British Jewish family whose founder was David ben Sassoon (1792-1864). The family has roots in various parts of Asia. They were originally wealthy merchants in Baghdad, but as the British East India Company developed, they established a base in Bombay and prospered. They expanded their trading network throughout Asia, but the family had many relatives, and they lived in Kobe during the Japanese settlement trade era (their mansion is preserved as a foreign-style house) and were also active in Yokohama.
