...A city in the north-central part of Nara Prefecture, in the southeastern part of the Nara Basin. In 1956, Sakurai Town incorporated the villages of Daifuku and Kaguyama, and became a city. Population 63,225 (1995). The former Sakurai Town was located at the mouth of the Hatsuse River, and had long been a market town that had developed with Hatsuseya, the Uda Mountains, and the Ryumon Mountains as its hinterland. In 1893, a railway line (currently the JR Sakurai Line) was opened between Sakurai and Takada, making it possible to transport lumber to Osaka. This led to the town attracting attention as a distribution center for lumber from the mountains, and it made a great leap forward, especially after World War II.
