Kaguyama Village

...A city in the north-central part of Nara Prefecture, in the southeastern part of the Nara Basin. In 1956, Sakurai Town incorporated the villages of Daifuku and Kaguyama, and became a city. Population 63,225 (1995). The former Sakurai Town was located at the mouth of the Hatsuse River, and had long been a market town that had developed with Hatsuseya, the Uda Mountains, and the Ryumon Mountains as its hinterland. In 1893, a railway line (currently the JR Sakurai Line) was opened between Sakurai and Takada, making it possible to transport lumber to Osaka. This led to the town attracting attention as a distribution center for lumber from the mountains, and it made a great leap forward, especially after World War II. Even today, lumber-related businesses, such as lumber mills and woodworking, account for about half of the total number of businesses in Sakurai City. ...

…奈良県中北部,奈良盆地南東部の市。1956年桜井町に大福,香久山の2村を編入,市制。人口6万3225(1995)。旧桜井町は初瀬川の谷口に位置し,古くから初瀬谷,宇陀山地,竜門山地を後背地として発展した市場町であった。1893年桜井~高田間に鉄道(現,JR桜井線)が開通し,大阪への鉄道輸送が可能となったことから,山地からの木材の集散地として注目をあび,特に第2次世界大戦後に飛躍的な発展を遂げた。今日も桜井市は製材業,木工業など,木材関係の事業所数が総事業所数の約半分を占めている。…
