Swedish author. Born the son of a garrison soldier. Without a significant academic background, he worked as a newspaper reporter before gaining recognition in the literary world with his debut work, The Ruskens: A Story of a Soldier Family (1927), and began his career as a writer. He is known for the four-part series, which depicts the immigration of a poor farming family to America: Emigrants Abroad (1949), The Settlers (1952), The New Frontiersmen (1956), and A Last Letter to Sweden (1959). This masterpiece gained many readers and was made into a film. During World War II, he satirized the Nazis in The Night Horse (1941) and criticized his country's neutrality policy in The Soldier with the Broken Gun (1944). A prolific national author.
