Common name for ammonium iron(II) sulfate hexahydrate, (NH 4 ) 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2・6H 2 O. Also called Mohr's salt, named after German Karl Friedrich Mohr (1806-1879). Along with alum and Tutton's salt, it is considered a typical example of a double salt. However, its actual structure is a double salt of iron(II) complex salts such as [Fe(H 2 O) 6 ]SO 4・(NH 4 ) 2 SO 4. It does not effloresce in air and is less susceptible to oxidation in air than other iron(II) salts, so it is used in analytical chemistry to make standard solutions of iron(II).
