Shozo Makino

Japanese:
Shozo Makino

Film director and producer. Born in Kyoto on September 22, 1878. As a young man, he helped his mother manage a theater and acquired a foundation in acting. In 1908 (Meiji 41), he directed films such as "The Battle of Honnoji" at the request of film promoter Yokota Einosuke, and the following year he scouted the traveling actor Onoe Matsunosuke, joining the then-founded Nikkatsu in 1912 (Taisho 1). He nurtured Matsunosuke into a popular star who starred in around 70 old-style dramas every year, and became a pioneer of film production in the Kansai region. After 1919 (Taisho 8), he sought independence from Nikkatsu and Matsunosuke, and demonstrated leadership in creating period dramas with the aim of modernizing old-style dramas. In 1925, he became independent as Makino Productions, and under its umbrella he produced many talented screenwriters, directors, and actors. His film technique is known as "ichisuji (planning and story), ni-nuke (clarity of the image), and san-do (acting). In 1928 (Showa 3), a fire broke out while he was editing his masterpiece "The True Story of Chushingura," and while he was showing enthusiasm for producing talkies, he died on July 25, 1929. His eldest son was the film director Makino Masahiro (Masahiro, Masahiro, Masahiro), his second son was the film producer Makino Mitsuo, and his fourth daughter, actress Makino Tomoko, had two sons who were actors: Nagato Hiroyuki and Tsugawa Masahiko.
