Procaine

2-(diethylamino)ethyl 4-aminobenzoate. _{C 13} H ₂₀ N ₂ O ₂ (236.31). It is prepared by transesterification of ethyl p -aminobenzoate with 2-diethylaminoethanol by heating, or by reaction of p -nitrobenzoyl chloride with 2-diethylaminoethanol and reduction of the product. Melting point 61 °C. Melting point of the hydrate is 51 °C. Soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, and benzene. The hydrochloride (novocaine, melting point 156 °C) is used as a local anesthetic.
