A city in eastern Aomori Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies part of Sanbongihara and Sabishirotai to the east of Lake Ogawara, and faces the Pacific Ocean. The city, through which the Aoimori Railway runs, became a naval air base in 1941, and after the war was home to a US Air Force base and a Self-Defense Forces Air Base, so it has a strong character as a base town. Agriculture is mainly field crops on the plateau, with potato and vegetable cultivation and dairy farming thriving. It is home to Misawa Airport, and is a base for wide-area tourism including Towada-Hachimantai, Rikuchu Kaigan, and Shimokita. In 2005, Butoke-numa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 119.87 ^km2 . Population 41,258 (2005).

青森県東部の市。1958年市制。三本木原の一部と小川原湖東部の淋代平(さびしろたい)を占め，太平洋に面する。青い森鉄道が通じる市街は1941年海軍航空基地となり，戦後は米空軍基地，自衛隊航空基地がおかれ，基地の街としての性格が強い。農業は台地上の畑作を主とし，ジャガイモ，野菜の栽培，酪農が盛ん。三沢空港があり，十和田八幡平，陸中海岸，下北など広域観光の拠点となっている。2005年に仏沼がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。119.87km²。４万1258人（2005）。
