A city in eastern Aomori Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies part of Sanbongihara and Sabishirotai to the east of Lake Ogawara, and faces the Pacific Ocean. The city, through which the Aoimori Railway runs, became a naval air base in 1941, and after the war was home to a US Air Force base and a Self-Defense Forces Air Base, so it has a strong character as a base town. Agriculture is mainly field crops on the plateau, with potato and vegetable cultivation and dairy farming thriving. It is home to Misawa Airport, and is a base for wide-area tourism including Towada-Hachimantai, Rikuchu Kaigan, and Shimokita. In 2005, Butoke-numa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland.
